After three different attempts and airplanes, we made it from LA to Kona, Hawaii. So relieved! We stayed at Hilton's Waikaloa Village for 7 days and it was wonderful!
View from our room
View from the boardwalk
Brett and Brook chillin' on the shuttle that took us around the resort
The waterfall at the hotel's own lagoon
Gorgeous flowers everywhere!
Puuhonua o Honaunau
Kapu, or sacred laws, were of utmost importance to Hawaiian culture and the breaking of kapu could mean death. A kapu-breaker's only chance for survival was to evade his pursuers and make it to a puuhonua, or a sacred place of refuge. Once there, a ceremony of absolution would take place and the law-breaker would be able to return to society.
Fierce kii, or wooden images of gods
Royal grounds
The Great Wall, standing 10-feet high and 17-feet thick
The Hale o Keawe Heiau, a sacred temple that housed the bones
of 23 alii (chiefs)
Next up... boogie boarding!
Brett's pretty much a pro... so we just follow him
That's right, Bre... hang loose!
Brett showing Brook the ropes
Bre's sliding in to home plate... I mean the beach
We spent hours each day at the Hilton's lagoon
The paddle boards were a huge hit!
So fun to see sister time!
And look... they're taking turns!
Sending love to Aunt Whit all the way from Hawaii
Dolphins at the resort. Our girls wanted to eat lunch every day at a restaurant near the dolphin exhibit so they could spend at least an hour watching them.
More beach time!
Brook and Bre building one of many sand castles
Brett scoping out the waves
More boogie boarding lessons
Ride it in baby!
So cute, Brook!
Hang loose, Bre!
Not sure why I started allowing this years ago... but the girls love to bury me at the beach
Then I get all the sand off by boogie boarding.
That's right, a mom that loves to play in the ocean!
I'm laughing... not crying!
Sunday morning and ready to go to church and do more site seeing
Hilton's Luau was one of our favorites
The tattoo artist only wore a loin cloth. Our girls were super embarrassed and had no idea where to look. Notice they're both looking away from him. Made Brett and I laugh!
Yes, despite embarrassing my daughters, I danced... and it felt good!
So much food... and so much we didn't recognize. Some good, some icky... but a very cool experience!
Brett and Brook enjoying the sunshine
Anj and Bre enjoying the music
The show was incredible!
Great costumes
Great dancing... both masculine and beautiful
After the Luau, the girls posed (surprise, surprise) by the stone fish and we played a game of outdoor checkers
One of our favorite places was a black sand beach.
It was about a three hour drive each way... and worth it
The biggest sea turtle we saw in Hawaii!
The sand felt more like small rocks... but we still dug our toes in!
I could have sat and watched the water meet the sand all day
Our girls sent Aunt Cheri a special message from black sands beach
Volcano National Park
Beautiful and scary at the same time
Yes, Bre's dinosaur pose... again
Brook tripped and fell while going through the lava tubes... poor girl!
Entering a lava tube
Next to our resort we found cave shelters and a walking path to the ocean
It was filled with petroglyphs...
...and by a golf course. Bonus!
That's right, girls. The Armstrong's were in Kona!
Relaxing with their ukulele's
No better place to read than overlooking the ocean
Bre
Brook
Our sweet girls
Brett trying to capture every moment
Beautiful sunsets every evening
If we weren't at the lagoon or beach, we were at the pool.
Can you say waterlogged?
Brett and our girls chillin' in a very large hammock right by the lagoon
